Working with eggs in food videos is always interesting because there is a lot to movement and texture to capture. From a slow motion egg yolk break to a close up shot of an egg shell cracking, there are several ways I’ve captured eggs in my own egg food recipe videos.
In this video, Alex Grima shows us how us utilizes a mixture of innovative camera techniques, motorized rigs, and probe lenses to get up close and personal with eggs. There’s a joke that everything looks better in slow motion, but add an extreme close-up shot with delicious foods and you get a mesmerizing piece of content.
There has been a trend with motorized rigs and robot arms to create camera movements that are hard to replicate with human hands, as well as move objects in a certain way so that a camera can capture complex actions consistently. Alex does an amazing job jumping back and forth from using camera movements to keeping the camera stable while the egg completes an action, showing a diversity in the visuals so it isn’t the same shot and angle throughout the video.
If you’re curious, here’s the list of the equipment he used:
Gears used:
Slider : Slypod: Gudsen MOZA
Camera: GH5 Panasonic France
Lens: Canon 100mm f2.8, sigma 18-35 SIGMA (Deutschland) GmbH
Probe Lens: Laowa by Venus Optics
Screen: Atomos Ninja V
Lights: Aputure Amaran 200 & 1 Godox Sl 60
Tripod: Neewer
I’m a big fan and owner of the Panasonic GH5 so it’s always refreshing to see other talented DP’s use the camera. The Atomos Ninja V is converting the footage into uncompressed video files to capture the best quality possible, while giving Alex a monitor to view his work. The Laowa Probe Lens is now a staple fixture for a lot of food and product videography, as it gives us an extreme close-up view of subjects. The Godox and Aputure combination is what I’ve used on sets so it’s great to see that this was lit with affordable lighting. The whole kit and camera/lighting setup costs under $15k, which is a steal for the amazing results Alex produces.
