Behind the Scenes: Crafting an Innovative Dorito's Commercial with Negin Catavian

Creating video ads at home or at a small studio can get boring when it’s just paper backdrops, softboxes, and cameras on a tripod.  But new equipment has been introduced into the market that have revolutionized the videography landscape and have made it more fun for creators to capture innovative shots.

In this BTS video of Negin Catavian's Doritos commercial, we get to see her use some unconventional equipment to capture innovative camera movements that bring the product to life without a huge budget.  Let's dive into the creative process and explore the innovative equipment that helped make it all possible.

Nanlite Lights: Nanlite Global and Nanlite Germany provided the backbone of the lighting setup for the Dorito's commercial shoot. The Forza 150 and Forza 60b models offered powerful and adjustable lighting, allowing Negin to create the perfect ambiance for each scene. The PavoTube II 30X and PavoTube 6C added versatility with their compact design and customizable color temperature, ensuring that every shot was beautifully lit and visually captivating. Light tubes have become popular with creators over the years because of their lightweight design, dynamic color ranges, and versatility - you can either carry it with your hands or rig it on a C-stand.

Raubay Spinner: One of the standout features of the commercial was the dynamic 360-degree spinner shots, courtesy of Raubay. This innovative tool added movement and excitement to the video, allowing Negin to showcase the product from every angle. The smooth rotation of the spinner provided a seamless transition between scenes, creating a sense of energy and momentum that drew viewers in.  Combining the spinner with VFX in post, Negin is able to mask out the background to show a 360-degree shot of the product.

Gudsen MOZA Stabilizers: To capture steady and fluid shots, Negin relied on Gudsen MOZA stabilizers, specifically the Aircross 3 in combination with the Slypod Pro. These professional-grade stabilizers offered unparalleled stability and control, ensuring that every frame was smooth and steady. Whether shooting handheld or on a rig, the MOZA stabilizers provided the stability needed to capture crisp and professional-looking footage.  Plus, using macro lenses to capture close up shots can lead to shaky camera footage, so teaming it up with a stabilizer makes all shots looks smooth.

V-Flat World Duo Boards: Creating the perfect backdrop is essential for setting the mood and tone of a commercial shoot. V-Flat World's Duo boards provided a versatile and portable solution for creating custom backgrounds on set. The double-sided design offered a variety of textures and colors to choose from, allowing Negin to easily create different looks for each scene.

The success of Negin Catavian's Doritos commercial can be attributed in large part to the innovative equipment used during the shoot. From Nanlite lights to Raubay spinners and Gudsen MOZA stabilizers, each tool played a crucial role in bringing her creative vision to life. Aspiring filmmakers and advertisers can draw inspiration from Negin's use of these innovative tools, demonstrating how the right equipment can elevate a project from ordinary to extraordinary.
