Creating engaging product video content is our bread and butter at Creative Haven.  I’ve been shooting and editing product videos for many years and it’s an evolving craft.  To set myself apart from other creators, I have to always find different ways to engage my target audience while making my clients’ products look amazing.  To find new videography techniques to add to my content, I search online for other creators who are using innovative approaches to create content to inspire my future shoots.

Recently, an Instagram post by MK caught my eye. MK demonstrated some incredible in-camera effects that anyone can replicate to make their product videos stand out. Let's dive into the technicalities and the magic behind these effects.

The Power of In-Camera Effects

In-camera effects are a fantastic way to add depth and creativity to your videos without relying heavily on post-production. These effects are created during the shooting process using various techniques and tools, allowing you to achieve a unique look that feels organic and visually captivating.

Relying too much of VFX, fancy transitions, and other post-production FX can make your content look too synthetic and fake.  Use in-camera effects to make your scenes feel more organic and real, while mesmerizing your viewer with your FX.

Lighting Setup: The Backbone of Great Videography

MK used an Amaran Lighting 150C paired with a Spotlight SE to create dynamic and vibrant lighting. This combination is perfect for highlighting the features of a product and creating a professional look.

Primary Light Source: Amaran 150C + Spotlight SE

  • The Amaran 150C is a versatile light that provides a strong, consistent source of illumination.

  • The Spotlight SE attachment helps to focus the light, creating a precise and dramatic effect that can enhance the product’s details.

  • For this setup, MK side-lit the product from the right with the Amaran 150C set to a blueish teal.

Complementary Light: Pocket Torch

  • MK introduced another light on the left side using a handy pocket torch. This small but powerful tool casts a warm, orangey light.

  • The warm light contrasts beautifully with the cooler teal light from the Amaran, creating a visually appealing color scheme that draws the viewer's attention.

Creative Surfaces and Effects

  • To achieve a black surface, MK used the lid of a random storage container placed on top of a kitchen stool. A black t-shirt would have worked too.

  • The glass product picked up a lot of specular highlights, which the camera was able to capture.

  • Using a special lens attachment, MK created circular rings around the highlights for added visual interest.

The Final Shot

  • MK started the shot out of focus and then rotated the Amaran light from the background to the product, as shown in the reel.

  • While doing this, MK waved the pocket torch up and down at the product.

  • Simultaneously, the lens focused onto the glass bottle, creating a reveal shot.

Tips for Achieving Professional Product Videography

Experiment with lighting

Don’t be afraid to play around with different lighting setups. Experimenting with various angles, colors, and intensities can lead to discovering new and exciting ways to showcase your product.

Use in-camera effects

Utilize tools like the Spotlight SE and lens attachments to create effects during the shoot. This approach saves time in post-production and ensures that the effects are integrated seamlessly into your footage.

Focus on composition

Pay attention to how you frame your shots. Composition is crucial in product videography; it can make the difference between a professional-looking video and an amateur one.

Highlight key features

Use your lighting and camera angles to draw attention to the product’s most important features. Whether it’s the texture, shape, or functionality, make sure these elements stand out.

By incorporating in-camera effects and mastering your lighting techniques, you can significantly elevate the quality of your product videography. Take inspiration from MK's innovative approach and start experimenting with your setups. With the right tools and creativity, you can create stunning, professional videos that captivate your audience and showcase your products in the best light possible.
