Videography and photography have many similarities when it comes to capturing products.  From lighting to frame composition, some say that if you are great at one, you can somewhat seamlessly transfer your skills to the other medium.  That’s how I feel with my transition into photography, which has helped me respect photographers even more as we sometimes share the same type of cameras to capture our imagery. Learning the different techniques photographers apply to their shoots can also influence how I utilize my camera for videography

Recently, I stumbled upon an intriguing behind-the-scenes post on Instagram by the talented Oliver Howells. His innovative approach to product photography, particularly for a Paco Rabanne Phantom Intense perfume shoot, captured my attention. Here's a closer look at how Oliver utilized cutting-edge tools and precise camera settings to achieve a futuristic, attention-grabbing image.

Behind the Scenes

Oliver's setup for this shoot was truly ingenious. He employed a continuous light source from a Godox QT400 light with a spotlight attachment through a diffusion screen to illuminate the product, creating a soft, even light. Additionally, he used a purple laser machine to create a laser effect in the background, adding to the futuristic vibe of the image. To enhance the visibility of the lasers in the photo, he used the PMI Gear Smoke Genie to add a smoky effect, giving the image depth and intrigue.

Camera Settings

Understanding the technical aspects of Oliver's shoot is essential for replicating his stunning results. Here are the camera settings he used:

  • Aperture: f/7.1

  • Shutter Speed: 1/4

  • ISO: 400

These settings were carefully selected to balance the light and capture the fine details of the perfume bottle. The aperture of f/7.1 ensured a sufficient depth of field, keeping the product sharply in focus while allowing the smoky background to blur artistically. The slow shutter speed of 1/4 helped gather more light, crucial for the low-light environment, and the ISO of 400 provided a clean image with minimal noise.

Lighting: The Continuous Light Advantage

Oliver's choice to use continuous light rather than flash was a standout feature of his shoot, offering several benefits:

  • Control: Continuous light allowed for real-time adjustments, helping perfect the scene before capturing the shot.

  • Consistency: It provided a steady light source, reducing the risk of harsh shadows and highlights common in flash photography.

  • Creativity: Continuous light was instrumental in creating dynamic and dramatic effects, as seen in Oliver's futuristic theme.

The Futuristic Vision

Oliver's innovative use of the Smoke Genie, combined with his chosen camera settings and continuous light, resulted in a photograph that feels both modern and timeless. The smoke added a layer of mystery and allure, transforming a simple product shot into a piece of art. This approach not only highlights the perfume but also evokes an emotional response from the viewer, making it a memorable and impactful image.
